Get More from Your SUP

So, what else can your standup paddleboard do for you? How about transform into a gym? Yes it can! Your SUP can quickly become more than just another board in your quiver. With many boards becoming stable enough to perform pilates and yoga on, your SUP can become a mobile gym.
Paddling out to your favorite spot and enjoying the serenity and peacefulness can be enough for most to get the perfect day going or to have a quick get away from the stresses and worries of the day. But did you know you can take another step toward centering your energy? There are many exercises you can perform on your SUP to strengthen your core.
With a board like the NRG Fitness (10'5"x30") that was designed by Starboard with the help of team rider Nikki Gregg, you can attach your paddle safely in order to perform exercises while not having to worry about your paddle getting away from you. The NRG Fitness also has multiple tie-down points integrated into the system so that you can even attach elastic training bands for performing resistance training on your SUP.
There are many groups that offer lessons and training for SUP fitness. These are great tools to use for those who are interested, but might be wary of starting on their own. Instructors will help you become familiar with exercises that you can perform on your SUP. If you are interested in joining a class contact the folks over at Paddle Island Adventures at 855-559-0559 or info@islandpaddleadventure.com
Of course there are many boards that can be used for SUP fitness and you should look for the best board that suits your needs. For all of your SUP needs please contact Charleston Watersport at (843)884-9098 or email us at info@charlestonwatersport.com

SUP Fishing

Many of our lives revolve on, in, or around the water. We constantly look for ways to incorporate everything we do with the water. Whether it's bringing our yoga and pilates classes to the water with stand up paddleboards (SUP), going for a run at the beach, or just enjoying a meal at your favorite waterfront restaurant.
Well, now you can enjoy fishing from your SUP. With the growth of SUP in the last five years, the boards have come a long way. There are boards for every occasion. Whether you're surfing, paddling in the creek behind your house, going for a nice down-winder, or looking to catch redfish in the creeks and on the flats, there is a board for you.
With so many boards out there, which one is the best? Well, for SUP-fishing we highly recommend Dragonfly Boatworks. Their unique design allows the angler to get into much skinnier water and all the stealth you need to sneak up on that tailing red you're hunting. With their shallow water fin you can reach places you've only dreamed about getting to. At 32" wide it provides plenty of stability once you hook up. SUP-fishing also allows the angler the advantage of spotting fish from further away than kayak anglers.
The Dragonfly's hull design is just another feature that separates it from other SUP-fishing boards. Their v-hull design allows the paddler to travel over distance with ease and cuts down on noise from water slapping against the bottom of the board.
So, if you're looking for the perfect way to combine your love of fishing and SUP-ing, look no more. Get on a Dragonfly and enjoy yourself.

Movie Night: That First Glide

Charleston Watersport hosted a second movie night at the Windjammer on February 22nd. The local premier of "That First Glide" was shown. The film featured the growth, history, and different aspects of stand up paddleboarding. With interviews featuring some of the biggest names in surf and SUP culture like Laird Hamilton, Gerry Lopez, Dave Kalama, Jaime Mitchell, and Robby Naish, there was no shortage of stoke.
The film did a great job of tracking the history of SUP, going all the way back to Duke Kohnomoku at Waikiki in the late 1930's, when he used to SUP on an Australian surf ski. From there it introduced names like John Ah Choy and John Zapotocki, bothpicking the sport up in the 1960's and 70's and continuing into the 90's.
"That First Glide" dedicated a whole section to the epic downwinders on the coasts of the Hawaiian islands. Parts filmed in Fiji and Tahiti had everyone talking about getting on the water!
Plenty of good times were had by all who attended, and afterward many folks were discussing getting together for a nice down-winder. A small crew got together on Saturday morning and paddled from Brittlebank Park downtown to Sunset Park on James Island.
This was the second "movie night" and there will be plenty more. If you would like to get notified when we will host the next one, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, or join SUPnation on Meetup.com.

Special Thanks to Everyone at The Windjammer for having us out!
